The Pilates Room

Location:
Second Floor

Equipment available:

NOAC has recently purchased several pieces of Pilates Equipment. We now have a Cadillac, a Reformer and the Wunda Chair! This equipment is excellent for the novice to the advanced practitioner and adds a whole new repertoire of exercises that compliment the mat series. Each piece of equipment has a system of springs for resistance allowing the client to move through a wide range of exercises while maintaining a smooth movement. These exercises address the body as a whole, help to correct asymmetries and chronic weaknesses and aid in bringing the body into balance.

History: Developed by Joseph Pilates during WWII, this program of exercises focuses on strengthening the deep abdominal muscles of the "core." A strong core benefits the entire body allowing for optimal posture, increased flexibility, strength, coordination and balance. Pilates exercises are an excellent rehabilitative system for back, knee, hip, shoulder, and repetitive stress injuries. In Joe's words, the Pilates Method "develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit." In each Pilates Mat class we will start by practicing the fundamentals to gain an insight into proper muscle usage then move into a variety of mat exercises. All levels of fitness are welcome and beginners are encouraged to attend! Please see the class schedule for time and dates.

Meet the Pilates Instructors:

Jennifer Pearl

Jennifer Pearl became interested in Pilates while taking a program developed by the NYC Ballet Company in 1994. The program emphasized length and strength within the physical body and she found many common elements with her yoga discipline.

In 2004, she became certified by the Physical Mind Institute in Pilates Mat and in Pilates Standing Exercises. In the summer of 2005, she completed a certification in Pilates Equipment. She had planned to start teaching in the fall of 2005 when Katrina hit New Orleans, closing the NOAC for one year. Jennifer taught locally and then furthered her Pilates training in the summer of 2006 and again in 2007 with Ellie Herman in San Francisco. She set up a private Pilates studio at the NOAC in the Fall of 2006 and has been teaching mat classes and private clients. She is certified on the all equipment through the Physical Mind Institute based in NYC.

Eleanor Carney

Eleanor Carney has been a professional ballet dancer for the past fifteen years. She received her Pilates training from Pilates on Fifth in New York City and her certification from Stott Pilates. Eleanor is currently a professor in the dance department at Tulane University and continues to guest as a professional dancer across the United States.
